What makes Red Hot really special isn’t just the amazing live music, incredible DJs, or dance after fantastic dance. It’s the FOOOOOOD!!

Instead of dance competitions, we have culinary ones! We’re bringing back our classic BBQ competition – still with a meat and vegetarian division.  We’re opening a new desert competition! And there’s a special secret competition you may have heard about…

We’ll also be feeding you plenty, above and beyond what the competitors provide. Go to our menu page for more on that.

Dessert Competition – Saturday

Responding to popular demand, Capital Blues is excited to unveil an all-new competition: the Dessert Competition! Desserts will be served on Saturday, after the Catered BBQ. We still have spots left, and you can sign up on the food tab under registration once you’re logged in. Each competitor will be reimbursed up to $35 for their efforts, and the winner will be rewarded with a fabulous, top-secret prize.

Dessert Competition Rules:

  • Competition will take place Saturday afternoon at ~4:00pm, following the serving of a catered BBQ meal.
  • Each team must provide judging bowls for 5 judges.
  • Each team must provide tasting samples for ~80 people in ~4-ounce bowls or cups (These tasting bowls will be provided by Capital Blues).
  • Each team is responsible for purchasing all food and bringing any tools or equipment needed.
  • Each team will receive up to $35 reimbursement from Capital Blues (save your receipts!) to help with food costs; team accepts costs in excess of $35.
  • Please note that the Saturday picnic location does have a fridge for storage, but does not have an oven sufficient finishing/heating.

Dessert Judging Criteria

  • Dessert-ness: Does the dessert complement the BBQ meal? Is it recognizable as dessert?
  • Taste: How well-balanced and delicious is the dessert?
  • Theme: How does this dessert fit in with the event of Red Hot? Does it work with a picnic-style meal?
  • Appearance: Does its appearance add or detract from the dessert experience?

BBQ Competition – Sunday

Do you make a stupendous spare rib? Prodigious pork? Tantalizing tofu? Prove it by bringing your best dish (no side dishes, please – our vegetarian friends want BBQ as much as our meat eaters!) to our BBQ competition! We still have spots left in our meat and veggie divisions, and you can sign up on the food tab once you’re logged in. Each competitor will be reimbursed up to $100 for their efforts, and the winner will be rewarded with a fabulous, top-secret prize.

BBQ Competition Rules:

  • Competition will take place Sunday afternoon between 1 and 5pm.
  • Each team must provide judging plates for 5 people.
  • Each team must provide tasting plates for 40-50 people.
  • Each team is responsible for purchasing all food and bringing any tools and cooking equipment needed.
  • Each team will receive up to $100 reimbursement from Capital Blues (save your receipts!) to help with food costs; team accepts costs in excess of $100.

BBQ Judging Criteria

  • BBQ-ness: Does the dish stand alone as an entree? does it depend on any garnish provided or can it stand alone as BBQ?
  • Taste: hot? spicy? mild? sweet?
  • Texture: crisp skin (if applicable)? tender? tough? moist? dry?
  • Appearance: does its appearance add or detract from the BBQ experience?
