Swinging Into Blues
In the workshop, we’ll start with some common swing dancing movements, and take you on a musicality and cultural-based journey of understanding the foundations of those movements. We’ll dive into how that is connected to and grew out of blues dancing, and explore the similarities and differences. You’ll get to practice and play with moves and movements both familiar and new, and we’ll show you different approaches for how to change them to fit different music styles and aesthetics.

About Robin:
Being a dancer who started later in life, and owing so much to the discovery of a hip hop tutorial video at the back of a You Got Served DVD, Robin truly believes that dance is inside every one of us. Whether it’s a fully realized passion, or a whisper of curiosity, he feels that dance should always be available to our selves, whatever one’s dance experience or familiarity. His dance repertoire is based on solo movement learned from a studio hip hop background, with the journey into social dancing starting with lindy hop, and over time including blues, balboa & fusion. And ever since his introduction to blues dancing in 2018, he has become a passionate practitioner and advocate of the form, and is dedicated to a continued journey of learning and sharing of blues dance and culture.

Dance locations and new class series

It’s a good time to dance blues. We’ve returned to our usual weekly schedule: dances every Thursday night at Glen Echo Park. And we’re thrilled to be offering our first workshop series in over two years: an all-levels class on blues connection.

Important location note: for three weeks in October, dances will happen in the Bumper Car Pavilion, right across from the Back Room at Glen Echo. See the weekly dances page for directions. The Bumper Car Pavilion is outdoors, so dress for the weather.

October dance locations:

Oct. 6 – Back Room
Oct. 13 – Bumper Car Pavilion
Oct. 20 – Bumper Car Pavilion
Oct. 27 – Bumper Car Pavilion

In November we’ll be back in the Back Room again. Dance with you soon!

January 2020 series: Blues idiom dances

It’s time to learn and respect the many different predecessors to the blues dance we do today. By learning the dances like the Boogie, Mooche, Piedmont triple, Savoy walk and the Texas shuffle (there are many more!), you will add variety and inspiration to your dancing. All levels are invited to this class.

Thursdays January 9th – 30th, 8pm-9pm. Classes will be held in Arcade Building Room 304. (It’s the building with the POPCORN sign; just take the elevator up to the top floor.)

Or show up 15 minutes early to register at the door.

No partner required. Tuition includes free admission into Blues dance immediately following the class from 9-11:30pm. Info: capitalblues.org. Minimum age 18.
